The cromox® stainless steel chain is designed for anchoring systems in which clean running and consistent handling matter during deployment and retrieval. The chain runs smoothly during deployment and retrieval, supporting controlled operation on board. The breaking load is higher than comparable galvanized chains.
Key performance features
- Designed to run smoothly when deploying the anchor.
- No galvanising burrs or protrusions of the kind found on galvanised chains.
- Supports consistent chain handling and smooth retrieval behaviour.
- Spreads easily to the sides to support proper operation in the chain handling system.
- Breaking load higher than galvanized chains.

Design and construction
cromox® stainless-steel chain is engineered for marine anchoring and long-term exposure to seawater. To maintain corrosion resistance, the chain should be kept clean so its protective passive surface layer can regenerate properly. As a simple routine, rinse the chain with fresh water after use, especially when it has been sitting in areas with persistent seawater contact such as the bottom of the chain locker.
Care and cleaning notes:
- Rinse with fresh water after use where possible.
- For visible “dirty spots”, the text describes cleaning using an oxalic acid + water solution (approx. 25 g per 1 liter of water) and checking progress in intervals, avoiding excessive exposure time.

Benefits of Electropolishing
Electrolytic polishing is an electrochemical process for surface treatment. It reduces the microroughness and overall surface area. Therefore dirt or product remains are much more unlikely to stick to the chain. The cleanability is improved. Electrolytic polishing is also used for deburring, buffing and passivating.
The process produces a metallurgically clean surface without defects. The material's corrosion resistance is fully exploited.
FAQs
Why choose a stainless-steel anchor chain instead of a galvanized chain?
Galvanized anchor chains rely on a zinc coating for corrosion protection. Over time, this coating can wear away through normal use and exposure to seawater. Stainless steel anchor chains do not require galvanization and therefore avoid the use of a sacrificial zinc layer. In addition, their long service life and corrosion resistance can contribute to reduced replacement frequency, making them an option for boat owners who consider durability and long-term environmental impact when selecting anchoring equipment.
What is the advantage of a higher breaking load in an anchor chain?
A higher breaking load provides a greater safety margin when the anchoring system is exposed to dynamic loads caused by wind, waves, or tidal movements. This can be particularly important for larger vessels and demanding anchoring conditions where load peaks may occur unexpectedly.
Why is chain calibration important for anchor systems?
Calibrated anchor chains are manufactured to precise dimensional tolerances to ensure compatibility with windlasses and chain-handling equipment. Proper calibration supports smooth operation, reduces the risk of jamming, and helps maintain reliable chain handling during anchoring procedures.
What is electropolishing and how can it benefit an anchor chain?
Electropolishing is an electrochemical finishing process that smooths and cleans the stainless-steel surface. The process can improve corrosion resistance, reduce surface roughness, and create a brighter finish, making the chain easier to clean and maintain in marine environments.
How should a stainless-steel anchor chain be maintained?
Routine maintenance typically involves rinsing the chain with fresh water after use and removing deposits that may accumulate during prolonged exposure to seawater. Keeping the surface clean helps preserve the stainless steel's passive protective layer and supports long-term corrosion resistance.
How do I select the correct anchor chain specification for my vessel?
The appropriate chain specification depends on factors such as vessel size, anchor weight, windlass compatibility, operating conditions, and applicable chain standards. When selecting an anchor chain, both dimensional compatibility and load requirements should be considered to ensure safe and reliable operation.
